Alone Time is Good for Everyone

By Kingdom Culture Parenting member Alicia Bennett

It is hard to be a kid these days. Constantly on the go to the next activity. Always surrounded by people, whether it’s classmates or siblings. Someone always expecting something.

Oh, wait, it’s also hard to be a mom … for the same reasons.

In today’s culture, slowing down and being alone seems to be a rare occurrence. And whether you and your children are introverts or extroverts, whether they get drained or energized from being around others, we need down time.

Brain science shows that memories are actually stored when we rest. Things are committed to memory when we have time to reflect. Adrenaline actually keeps us from learning well. Pace matters.

I know you’ve seen it as a mother when your child gets tired: they are more emotional, more distractible, and struggle to make good decisions.

Being on the go all day long is actually bad for both their emotional development and brain development.

One of the best things that I implemented (honestly it was for my own sanity at the time!) was what we called “Quiet Rest Time.” It started when my toddler gave up his last nap and I was pregnant with number two. But what I saw come out of having this regular rhythm and practice in my home over the years made me hold onto this practice for years past the toddler stage. And even though my oldest is way past the toddler years now, we still pull it out regularly when I can tell everyone needs a break.

So, first, what is it?

“Quiet rest time” was simple and the parameters are inside the name itself – quiet rest time in their room. It is not a punishment, and your children must understand that this isn’t meant to be a discipline for poor choices or behavior. It is a reset time. And truly is a blessing for your family dynamics and culture.

You see, all day long, whether kids are doing school or just playing with friends or siblings, they are “on.” Their brains are taking in information, figuring out how to interact with others, working on being kind and sharing, and dare I say, growing new brain connections called dendrites. And just like when your muscles get tired when you exercise, their brains get tired. Older kids might find “brain breaks” are a quick and easy way to rest their brain. But for younger kids, actually stepping out of the group and going to recharge in the quiet of their room really helps set up everyone for a better second half of the day.

During “quiet rest time,” young children have time and space to play with something they want to without having to consider another person’s wishes or feelings. They don’t have to figure out sharing. They don’t have to verbally communicate their wishes. They can do whatever they want in their rooms as long as its quiet.

Even older children can step away from being “on” and recharge without having to think about what task is next on their schedule. They can relax and be a kid again, simply playing or reading whatever is on their heart and mind.

Resting their body if they need.

Resting their minds so they came come back ready to learn and grow.

What benefits could you see in your home when implemented regularly?

  • After “quiet rest time,” siblings will come back together ready to share and play nicely, no longer squabbling over small things.
  • After, children are ready to come back and try something again, whether it is learning something new or going out somewhere fun.
  • After, both parents and children are refreshed and ready to engage with each other again with new energy and delight.

So how would I go about implementing “Quiet Rest Time?”

If you have nappers still, the ideal time for “quiet rest time,” would be while your littler one naps. Tell your older kids that we are all going to have some down or alone time to take a break, you can even tell them that it’s for you, mama (because it is!). I usually assign or do a rotation for what room (or space!) each child goes to if siblings share bedrooms. Set a timer if that helps. I remind them of the rules – quiet and in the room and that this isn’t a punishment. I would encourage younger kids to take a rest/nap if they are amiable to it. For readers, this is a good time to read. Encourage them to play with a special toy they don’t want to share or build with legos without having a crawling baby to be careful of. But this time does not include any sort of screen. Research shows us that screens actually fire up the brain in a different way than face-to-face interactions so having your “Quiet Rest Time/Room Time” include screentime will not meet the intended purpose.

If you have a child that is giving up naps but still sometimes needs them, have some method to have them lie down in bed for 30 minutes for the “rest time” before the “room time” part. That way, if they need a nap, they’ll take one and if they don’t, they are learning to rest their bodies, which if anyone has raised toddlers, you know they need a little practice doing. Around the time my children turned five years old we dropped the “rest time” part, but that will depend on the child.  Just be careful not to give it up at their first fight against it.

If your children are having a hard time implementing this or staying in their room, start with small increments of time. Five minutes. Then 10 minutes. Work your way up to the desired amount of time. During different seasons, our “quiet rest time” was different lengths based on what I could tell we all needed but it typically ranged from 1-2 hours.

And you may find that certain of your children dislike it – they are probably your extroverts! But even those extroverts need down time and I found that they, too, played better with their siblings after having some alone time each day. They might just need a little more coaching and training to get started and learn why these times are important for everyone.

The Relational Lifestyle Summit 2024

Do you want to cultivate “good soil” in the hearts of your children, so the “seeds” of the Word will not be stolen, wilted, or choked, but will bear fruit for God’s Kingdom? (Mark 4)

That’s what the groundbreaking (no pun intended) Relational Lifestyle Summit is all about: It’s a week-long event coming April 8-12, 2024, where we’ll explore together how to cultivate good soil in our families, homeschools, churches, and communities for a way of life that’s gospel-infused and joy-filled.

We’ll join hosts, homeschool parents Daniel & Megan, Brandee, and Sam & Bekah, as they personally interview a world-class — and better yet, biblically literate! — lineup of parents, authors, and speakers … featuring a variety of perspectives, unique stories, and creative approaches to applying biblical truths in your family.

Together, we’ll focus on five aspects and applications of this way of life:

  1. Day 1, The Relational Lifestyle: Do Life Together
  2. Day 2, Relational Family & Church: Enjoy & Worship God Together
  3. Day 3, Relational Learning & Teaching: Explore God’s World Together
  4. Day 4, Relational Work & Ministry: Steward & Disciple God’s World Together

The entire event is FREE if you sign up by April 8th, and on top of the video sessions, you’ll get access to an online exhibit hall (shop some great discounts!) and the opportunity to connect with other attendees around the world — and perhaps right in your hometown — through our private, 20,000+ member Homeschool Summits Facebook group.

Come catch a vision at the Relational Lifestyle Summit that will explode the walls of your homeschool into a good-soil way of life that will impact the nations and generations for the glory of God!

What are you waiting for? Learn more and register for free (for a limited time only!).

Encouragement, Kingdom Culture Kids

For Our Kids Today

This is a sweet word from the Lord He asked me to share with you as I prayed for our kids here in this Kingdom Culture Parenting community….

You don’t have to be the best. You ARE the best, because the One Who is the Best at EVERYTHING is within you. And success by Heaven’s standards is not how many “A”s you get or how many people approve of all the the things you do, but only this: Did you love? Matthew 22:37-40. Are you loving God? And are you loving others? Then you are doing all I have asked you to do. So, whatever new task you take on that seems overwhelming, just ask Me, and I will help you do that. I will empower you. Philippians 4:13. Because asking Me to help you is one of the ways you love Me. And doing well at your chores and schoolwork is loving Me AND loving those around you. But you can’t love like that on your own. It’s My love that makes it easy. So, receive My love for you. Know how much you mean to Me. And then, let Me empower you to also love those around you. Okay, let’s go! Today, let Me help you triumph over that mountain of stuff you’ve got to do. Because through My love, you are more than a conqueror! Romans 8:37-38.

If you’d like to help your children draw near to God and practice inviting Him into every circumstance and difficulty all throughout the day, we highly recommend Listen to Me: Heart Talks with Jesus prayer devotional packed with questions to recognize God’s voice, questions to ask Him, and steps to healing from trauma and fear. An accompanying Listen to Me Prayer Journal (actually on sale now at Amazon for just $3.75!) helps kids process what God is teaching them through the devotional, and the Every Day with Jesus Prayer Journal diary helps them get in the habit of seeking God every morning and inviting Him to guide them throughout the day.

Happy Thanksgiving

A prayer of thankfulness and for covering our families as we celebrate together. Love you all!

Lord, we thank You for every blessing You have given us this year, and for all the ways You’ve carried us through the trials. Thank You for sending Your Son to die for us so we can live abundantly in You. Thank You for Your mercy, Your grace, Your guidance, Your love. For always being there for us, always faithful, always good. As we get together for the holidays, please, Lord, come and meet us in powerful ways. Fill our homes with Your presence, cover us with Your peace. Give us gentle, kind words to turn away wrath. Guide our conversations over meals, as we talk together, and all throughout each day. Open up opportunities for us to speak words of life to draw others closer to You, and to turn the hearts of the lost to the One and only Savior. For those who are hurting this Thanksgiving, Lord, point them out to Christians who will step in and help, pouring out Your love in such abundant measures that they will see You as You truly are and choose to follow You with all their hearts. Show us, Lord, how we can be that blessing to others. We love You, Lord. We don’t know what the future holds, or what this holiday will look like a year from now, but we know the One Who holds our future in His hands, and You, O Lord, are good.

A Historic Event for the Whole Family … for FREE!

Imagine for a moment:

You fixed a great breakfast and are relaxing around the table with a special guest — who happens to be a renowned historian. (Yes, at your breakfast table. Keep imagining.) Your kids lean in to listen as he shares almost-lost stories of God’s work across the ages, among the nations … like the life of Eleazor, one of David’s mighty men, or heroes of the early church, or Pilgrims in the beginnings of American history … and you want to keep going but oh wow! It’s already way past time for lunch!

And you realize … you just finished history material for the WEEK all in one sitting and you hardly noticed time passing!

You can stop imagining and start planning, because we’re gathering those historians and bringing them to you!

The God-Centered History Summit is a free, online, thrilling story-telling experience that will showcase the amazing work of Jesus around the world through the millenia.

  1. Sign up for free right here.
  2. Block your calendar for April 3-7, 2023.
  3. Bring your kids to join you as you experience the amazing work of Jesus around the world through a week of video sessions.

We believe that by remembering the past, we prepare our kids for the future, with their eyes on the grand story of God’s work through the ages spurring them on to live by faith in the ages to come.

The entire event is FREE if you sign up by April 3rd, and on top of the video sessions, you’ll get access to an online exhibit hall (shop some great sales!) and the opportunity to connect with other attendees around the world — and perhaps right in your hometown — through our private, 20,000+ member Homeschool Summits Facebook group.

It’s our prayer that your entire family will experience the God-Centered History Summit with a fresh vision for living a life by faith in our great God.

victory strategy

#3 Know Why We Are at War

Ephesians 6:10-20; Revelation 12; Hebrews 10:14

When Satan, formerly an angel in God’s service, proudly waged war against the Most High, he and his followers were thrown out of Heaven.

Now, because God lovingly created each of us for relationship with Him, Satan and his demons wage war against us to draw us away from that love. Revelation 12.

A dreadful tale, especially for those of us who have felt the heat of Satan’s anger. But our enemy actually is already defeated. The trials you experience now, in some respects, are just the tail thrashing about after the serpent’s head has been cut off. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 20-23, 51-58.

So, if Jesus has already won the victory through His death and resurrection, why are we still fighting?

Because we are in the process of “being made holy.” Hebrews 10:14.

You aren’t here on earth to be comfortable, make an empire for yourself, get everyone to like you, or do what you want. You’re here to draw near to God and to influence others to do the same.

This time we have on earth is training ground. It’s where we experience God’s character, love, grace, holiness, and power; and make choices moment-by-moment about what or whom we will love and serve. Those who choose Christ and endure to the end receive the prize. Hebrews 12:1-3.

If we were all mindless robots serving God because we had to, there would be no fight, no reason for Satan to bother us. In fact, we wouldn’t exist at all. Because God is Almighty, All-powerful, He doesn’t need to create a bunch of people to do something for Him. He can do anything. Rather, He created us for relationship, to love Him, enjoy Him, and draw others into that love.

Those who don’t choose God’s side don’t get to skip the fight; they just miss out on the joy and peace that come from going through each battle in Christ’s empowering. Exodus 14:14.

Practice with Purpose

In what ways have you recognized you are in a battle between light and darkness?

For discussion in the comments …

  1. What trials are you going through now? What verses or truths has God given you to overcome?
  2. Read Romans 8:14-39. What does this mean to you, especially with regard to what your family is going through right now?
  3. What are some ways God is calling you into greater oneness with Him? How will that affect your family?
  4. The enemy’s main aim is to keep us from oneness with Christ. How have you been letting the enemy win?
  5. How has the enemy been using you to increase dissension in your marriage? What is God asking you to do to turn that battle around?

Pray for the USA

Lord, we need You. Desperately.
Break our hearts for what breaks Yours.
Awaken us.
Heal us.
Save us.
Set us free.
Make LOVE our one cause we fight for.
Forgive us, Lord, for we have sinned greatly
against You and against one another.
We have judged and slandered
those who judge and slander.
We have ranted against prejudice,
while prejudice reigns in our own hearts.
We have each in our own way
sought to kill, steal, and destroy.
We are a people in need of a Savior.
A people in need of True Love.
Tear down the lies that cause dissension,
and replace them with truth and grace.
Put an end to hatred and murder,
and restore to us understanding and life.
For those who have sinned,
and those we have sinned against,
come and meet us in our dark places,
and heal us.
For those who have not understood,
give us now understanding.
For those who have not cared,
let us now truly care.
For those who have lived in fear,
give us now faith.
For those who have stood for love,
give us now favor.
When we cry out to You, O God, hear us,
and answer us with Your forgiveness and salvation.
Open the ears of those who have been closed.
Soften the hearts of those who have been hardened.
Open the eyes of those who have been blind.
Heal those who have been wounded.
Let us see You as You truly are,
the wounds on your brow, Your hands, Your feet.
Let us see Your loving arms spread wide in welcome,
and choose at last to surrender to Your embrace.
Give us the courage to hate what we have become,
and surrender to You.
For You alone have the power
to transform us, heal us, and set us free.
Save us now, O Lord, like only You can.
We need You.
Anoint Your church to speak Your words
of hope, salvation, and healing to every heart.
Help us fight for the things that matter,
to make this nation a safe place for our children,
and their children, and generations yet to come.
Awaken us now, O Lord, to You.
For You are the LOVE we long for.

In Your name we pray. Amen.

Pray for Worldwide Revival

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV

With the whole earth caught in the grip of this pandemic, it’s time now to ask the Lord for a shift in the battle for the nations, so that millions of lost will come to Christ, and strong, vibrant, multiplying churches, grounded in truth and love, will spring up all over the world.

Will you join me?

Tomorrow May 5, let’s set aside the day to pray for a global awakening to God’s love.

In preparation, I encourage you to write lists in your prayer journal of neighbors who are lost, nations God has placed on your heart, missionaries, top 50 nations where Christians are persecuted, ministries that fight against abuse and human trafficking, and anything else the Lord lays on your heart. Begin praying even now for spouses and children who are undergoing abuse during quarantine, for frontline workers who are experiencing anxiety, for government leaders, and especially for every heart to hunger for the Lord. Let’s seek Him for a global breakthrough, so that millions, even billions will be saved, and strong, vibrant churches will be planted all over the world, even in the least likely of places.

Below, I’ve written out some suggestions for how to get your family, church, or others involved. But you’re welcome to pray any way the Lord leads you. You can also sign up here for a free guide to knowing God’s voice.

  • Fast until supper.
  • Cook an international dinner, and pray together during the meal.
  • Have a family worship service, and spend time in prayer for the nations.
  • Lay a map of the world out on the floor, or use a globe, and lay hands on each country as you pray.
  • Let each person in your family (church, Bible study group, etc.) choose a country to pray for. Do research on that country’s specific problems, needs, government, religion, etc., and pray with purpose, either on your own or together over the internet.
  • Write out your prayers for governments, peoples, nations, the hurting, the persecuted … and post them on social media, so others can join you in praying for that.
  • Prayerwalk your neighborhood or other areas where there are internationals, businesses, families in need, or others God lays on your heart.
  • Do drive-by prayer to cover government seats, businesses, hospitals, internationals, the elderly, schools, homeless, churches, etc.
  • Make a poster, and write out the prayers and verses God lays on your heart, and then keep that poster somewhere where you can continue to pray daily.
  • Write the prayers and verses in your journal, and keep it by your Bible, so you will continue to pray daily for worldwide revival.

Lord, we ask You for the nations. Please bring forth a mighty revival all across the world. Turn every heart to You. Suppress wrong, and increase right. Expose evil, and give every person from every nation a hunger for what is right and good and holy. Make seekers out of every lost heart. May they seek You in earnest and find You, Lord. Come and meet them in their dreams, in their trials, in their sin, in their triumphs, and in their failures. Bring them to their knees, so desperate for a Savior, that when they hear Your Good News, they will turn to You and be saved. For the backslidden, Lord, we ask You to break the bonds that tie them to the enemy’s plans for their lives, and set them free to run after You with all their hearts. Reunite marriages. Heal the sick. Make the lame to walk, and the blind to see. And do it in a way that all will know You are the One Who did that. Usher in an unprecedented era of miraculous signs and wonders by Your hand that will turn the world’s attention to You. Whenever someone cries out to You, Lord, hear their prayers, and answer. Show the world Your love. Show them You are strong. That You are more than enough. That You are the One they are looking for. That You alone are Good. And that You love us with a love that is without borders. May every tribe and language know that You alone are God. In Your precious name. Amen.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations…,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back.” Jeremiah 29:11-14 NIV
